First impressions count, and none more so than on that all-important first hot date. Picking out a suitable bar for the first encounter is just as crucial as choosing what to wear. Pick your regular haunt and you run the risk of being pestered and picked on by your mates, whereas somewhere too loud will make conversation difficult.

Leeds is brimming with a diverse range of bars to suit every whim and fancy, ranging from unpretentious pubs to swanky cocktail bars. Here’s our pick of 10 best first date bars for students in Leeds.

Roland’s opened up less than a year ago, providing a much needed breath of fresh air to Call Lane. Whereas many of its neighbouring bars are loud and full-on, this joint is so chilled out, you’ll forget you’re on one of the city’s busiest streets. Classic rock from the likes of The Doors blends in with more modern sounds, as well as a dash of Motown (but not too loud mind), as you sip one of their fine cocktails or craft ales.

Friends of Ham

If you’ve got an inkling your date is the cultured and refined type, then Friends of Ham might be the one. As well as an impressive wine list, the bar also offers an extensive selection of bottled ales, fruit flavoured lagers and whiskies. If you do get peckish, they also specialise in charcuterie and cheese boards, and if conversation runs dry, check out their retro games in the basement.
